BY-LAW NO. 4641
SCHEDULE "A"
ALL AND SINGULAR that certain parcel or tract of land and premises
situate, lying and being in the Town of Kincardine, in the County
of Bruce and Province of Ontario and being composed of Lot Three,
being a subdivision of Lots Four and Five, North of Durham Market
in the said Town of Kincardine, as shown on Registered Plan No.
169.
SCHEDULE "B"
Historical Reasons:
The Building situated at 343 Durham Market North across from Victoria
Park dates back to the 1870's. It was built by Thomas C. Rooklidge
whose family also built and operated the "pork factory" on the south
side of the park. It was purchased in 1886 by John Gentles,
liveryman and horse dealer. In 1911 his estate sold the residence
to R. J. Stewart, prominent and capable lawyer, a staunch Conservative
supporter, for his wife Jessie and family. In 1948 Arthur Rogers,
Jr., owner and publisher of the Kincardine News purchased the home
for his wife Helen and family. In 1960, Ross McLennan, Funeral
Director became the new owner and from this location Ross operated
a funeral home.
Durham Market Developers purchased the building and in 1977 it was
purchased by John L. Slade, as his residence and having the offices
of Miller-Slade Insurance Agency as the main occupant.
Architectural Reasons:
The building at 343 Durham Market North is a large white (painted-
grey) brick building. It is a prime example of Italianate
Architecture common to many of the large old homes in Kincardine.
The most notable features of the building are a low pitched mansard
roof, a centre tower on the front facade which faces Victoria Park,
windows with rounded headers and decorative keystones and a verandah
with Greek columns.
